Asymmetry
If asymmetry is a concern, try looking at some factory machined instruments if absolute symmetry is what you desire. There are no two sides to any human face the same, no two halves of any Stradivarius the same and definitely no two sides of any J.B. Guadagninni violin scroll the same. This is the beauty of handmade musical instruments or just about anything handmade.
Asymmetry
That is 100% the case in hand made instruments! The violin is a fine example for every instrument maker to use as a model. I use strad posters all the time to reference my banjo making. Having said all of this I am sure that this Mercier banjo is symmetrical...however Luke is a violin maker and works well within the tradition.
headstock
Are the headstocks on these Mercier banjos as assymetrical as they appear in the photos??
Hi there, I am sure it is
Hi there, I am sure it is the perspective from which they were photographed. They are symmetrical.
